Music like this has been put together by the music industry since recording began: you re-jig the formula every once in a while but you trust the pros to do their job and you give the people what they want. You can imagine the images I have in mind – the road trip through sagebrush drylands, the impromptu party in the open air around an old cantina, the wedding party with everybody colourfully dressed and colurfully drunk. To me it sounds like the soundtrack to some cheerful cross border film that hasn’t been made yet. It’s pop, it’s beer joint dance music, it’s sentimental, irreverent and fun. You might be wary of such a project, there’s not a great history with “previously unreleased” material, but this sounds just fine – no sharp dividing line between good tracks and fillers. Those last two are no longer with us but both contribute posthumously as Doug’s son Shawn steers this first new recording in a decade. The star names were Flaco Jimenez, Augie Meyer, Doug Sahm and Freddy Fender. sometimes both languages in the same song, sometimes not quite either) and having a barrel of fun along the way. Founded in the 1990s as a Tex-Mex supergroup, the Tornados were renowned for cheerfully mixing up rock’nroll with Mexican styles, singing in Spanglish ( i.e. Texas Tornados: A Little Bit is Better Than Nada-Prime Cuts 1990–1996, a two-CD set featuring remastered album cuts, rarities, and unreleased tracks, was released in 2015.Short history lesson for those, like me, who know nada of the Tornados. Several of the original sidemen were still with the band, including Louie Ortega (guitar), Speedy Sparks (bass), and Ernie Durawa (drums). In the 2010s the Texas Tornados continued to perform, fronted by Shawn Sahm, Augie Meyers, and Flaco Jiménez. These recordings were released as an album titled ¡Está Bueno! in 2010 on Ray Benson’s Bismeaux label. Shawn began producing recordings by the Tornados, including unrecorded songs by Doug and new ones by Freddy. During this time Doug’s son Shawn became a member of the band. However, the 2005 New West Records release on DVD of the group’s 1990 Austin City Limits appearance, Texas Tornados-Live From Austin Tx, kept the group’s name in front of the public. Freddy Fender’s death in 2006 further depleted the front line complement. The Tornados slowed down for a time when Doug Sahm died unexpectedly in 1999. In 1999 the Virgin label released Live from the Limo, a recording of a 1998 live show at Antone’s club in Austin. The band toured extensively to promote their releases. A song on the 4 Aces album, “Little Bit is Better Than Nada,” was used as the theme for the Kevin Costner movie Tin Cup (1996). Reprise released four more Tornados albums, Zone of Our Own (1991), which was nominated for a Grammy Hangin’ on by a Thread (1992) The Best of Texas Tornados (1994) and 4 Aces (1996). Together they brought a blend of Tex-Mex rock, country, R&B, and conjunto that defined their unique sound and garnered glowing reviews. San Antonio accordionist Flaco Jiménez was the son of conjunto legend Santiago Jiménez, Sr., and Fender (born Baldemar Huerta in San Benito) made early strides in rock-and-roll as “El Bebop Kid” in the late 1950s and struck gold as a country and cross-over artist in the mid-1970s. Sahm and Meyers of San Antonio had first gained prominence in the Sir Douglas Quintet in the mid-1960s. The album was also released in an all-Spanish version titled Los Texas Tornados. The album hit Number 5 on the country charts, and a song on that album, “Soy de San Luis,” won the 1991 Grammy for Best Mexican-American Performance. Hailed at the time as a “supergroup of Texas legends,” they were signed by Warner Brothers Reprise and recorded their first album Texas Tornados in 1990 at the Fire Station Studios in San Marcos. Started by Doug Sahm in 1989, the now legendary band, Texas Tornados, was originally fronted by Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender, Augie Meyers, and Flaco Jiménez.

It’s much more motivating to have a concrete image in your head of how much garbage is being produced in just one tiny corner of the world by actually watching it happen for a few hours, and then start working through multiplying this amount out as far as your brain will let you go until you realize that the real amount is infinitely more than the most you can imagine. You know a lot of waste is being produced but this knowledge is more theoretical than practical. I believe one of the main causes for the apathy that most of us feel in the face of one of the greatest threats to our survival, and the survival of all other life forms, is that the problem is so big that it’s difficult to even conceptualize. A consumer economy only functions if people keep consuming, and this means constantly replacing the old with the new. The byproduct of a consumer economy is waste. Philosophical arguments against a consumer economy aside, arguments like the vacuousness and greed it reinforces or the fact that it turns people into commodities too who must try to fetch the best price for themselves on the labor market, we have a much more practical and pressing problem. Then I thought about how all of them combined represented only the tiniest fraction of the total amount of waste being produced. Then I started factoring in all of the other fast food chains. Then I thought about its multiple other locations in almost every city. First I thought of just that chain restaurant in airports all over the world. She was delayed by traffic so I occupied myself by observing how much garbage all of the coming and going passengers produced over the short period of time I was there.Īn employee came around emptying several garbage cans, each with its own large plastic bag filled to the brim with garbage, so regularly that my mind began to swim as it feebly attempted to calculate the actual amount of garbage being produced all over the world at that moment. I found a spot that happened to be right next to a global fast food restaurant. A few years ago I was waiting for someone to pick me up at the airport in Buenos Aires and decided to sit by the main entrance so that we could make contact easier. These new "smart" timers could be interfaced with on a device such as a smartphone or tablet. Starting in the 2010s, timers began to be integrated with a home's network and internet services. This system was called "MaxiCom" and worked through a set of "cluster control units", each of which in turn synchronized a number of "satellite" controllers.Īs computer-controlled sprinkler timers grew in popularity and usage throughout most sprinkler systems, refinements continued to be made in timers and their functionality. The 1990s saw the introduction of computer-controlled "central control" systems, pioneered by Rain Bird for use on golf courses. This overtook the electromechanical timers as the most common design, and today nearly all timers sold are hybrid designs. In the late 1980s, the irrigation company Hydro-Rain introduced the first "hybrid" controller design, called the HR-6100, which combined electronic programming with a visual programming interface involving a single selector dial. Many companies followed with similar designs, such as Rainmaster, Griswold Controls, Toro, and Irritrol. Other, less-common systems involve fluid-filled hydraulic tubes to open or close the valves. Irrigation control systems almost always use 24-volt alternating current transmitted over two wires, one of which is "common" and connected to all the valves. This timer which became standard issue in many tract homes during the 1980s and proved to be remarkably durable in its construction, with many still operating today. Rain Bird later introduced the RC-7A to their Rain Clox line, which featured an "at a glance" electromechanical programming interface that proved very easy to operate, and offered the ability to omit stations from the program sequence without creating time gaps. This controller proved popular for many years, but was hard to reprogram and it did not operate valves in immediate succession unless each valve was set to run for an hour. Compact irrigation timers did not become commonplace until the 1970s when Lawn Genie introduced a mechanical timer which measured only ten by six inches and was four inches deep. These timers were large and cumbersome with numerous mechanical parts and were usually relegated to agricultural and commercial applications. Irrigation timers first appeared in the early 1960s to control large-radius lawn sprinklers, which at the time usually contained their own electrically operated valve (most golf-course sprinklers still use this type of actuation).
